On 26 February, President Ursula von der Leyen appointed Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight Vice President MaroÅ¡ Å efÄoviÄ (pictured) as the EU’s representative and Co-Chair of the Joint Committee established by the Withdrawal Agreement (Article 164).

The Joint Committee is made up of representatives from both the EU and the UK and is responsible for overseeing the implementation and application of the Withdrawal Agreement. One of its many tasks include setting out a mechanism to resolve possible disputes over the interpretation of the Agreement.

If such a scenario were to occur, the EU and the UK can refer each other to this Committee. Vice-President Šefovi will naturally work in close coordination with Michel Barnier and the Task Force on Relations with the United Kingdom. Vice President Šefovi said: “The role of the Joint Committee must now focus on implementing the commitments enshrined in the Withdrawal Agreement and we will work closely with the UK to make sure this is effectively taking place. We will of course work hand-in-hand with Michel Barnier and his team.

The European Commission’s Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier said: “I am looking forward to working with MaroÅ¡ Å efÄoviÄ to ensure that the Withdrawal Agreement works well and is applied properly. This will be key for building a solid future partnership with the UK.â€

The first meeting of the Joint Committee is set to take place before the end of March.
